Chapter 1011: 1011 Gormana Online

Wolfe looked at the group once they were back outside again. “Did anyone bring a map of which locations were priorities for the basic national grid? Or are we just doing these by which are closest?”

Galrog, the Wrathbringer among Gormana’s Guardians, laughed as he took a folded paper from his suit jacket.

“The closest critical location is here.” He explained, while handing the map to Wolfe.

There were only six locations which were marked critical, as once they were online at full capacity, there should be enough base power for the reduced energy use that the citizens had gotten used to before the real shortages began.

According to the paper, they were all coal plants that had been adapted to burn mostly wood, as that was the only real renewable energy source that was suitable. But trees didn’t grow fast enough for the massive power usage that the nation had at its peak, at least not in the limited space that they had available and not occupied by people or crops.

That would make it easy on Wolfe.

The flight was only a few minutes long at the sort of speeds that Wolfe could manage, and even though they were informed that the group was coming, none of the guards had actually expected to see them today.

“Saint Noxus, Guardians. We didn’t know that you were coming this soon. Did we need to do anything to prepare the plant for the transition? We’ve still got the boiler running, and it’s near peak demand for the grid, so even with the nuclear plant online, we can’t afford to take it offline for long without changing the blackout schedule.” The guard informed them, beginning to panic.

“Don’t worry, I can do this without taking the plant offline. In fact, you might even still be able to clear the ash out after I finish, and do whatever other maintenance you usually do.” Wolfe comforted him.

“Alright, let me lead you inside. I will show you around the facility. There isn’t a senior manager here right now, but I’ve been the head of security for nearly twenty years, so I know this facility as well as anyone.” The guard informed them.

The plant was actually much more simple than Wolfe had thought it might be. There was a large boiler next to a turbine, and a radiator in a cooling tower with forced air blowing both the smoke from the wood fire and clean air up the stack to bring the steam back to liquid form to return to the boiler.

The turbine drove a generator that was the same model as the one in the Nuclear plant, which would save Wolfe even more time, as he could reuse the efficiency spell that he had cast on the last one.

“Do you know if all the facilities use these same generator coils?” Wolfe asked.

“Most of them. They were the most efficient ones we had available during the last refit, so pretty much all the plants got them, unless they had been upgraded ahead of schedule.” The guard explained.

Wolfe nodded and got to work, enchanting the power plant and watching as the total output rose until it was getting close to the plant’s rated maximum. Then he changed his focus to the boiler furnaces and cast the most efficient heating spell that he could manage, along with the mana gathering array, before linking the outputs to the plant controls.

“There we go. Once the wood runs out, you won’t need to add any more. The furnaces will stay hot on their own using mana. I linked the output to your controls. That way, if you need to take the plant offline, any of the staff members can do it with the same procedures and protocols as they are used to now.” Wolfe explained, giving them the same spiel that he had given to the ones at the Nuclear plant, who were much more uptight and safety focused than these ones.

But really, if there was a breach here, the worst that could happen was a fire in the plant, where almost everything was concrete, or a flood if the boiler breached, which would just flood out the furnaces and shut the plant down on its own.

It might have been more polluting, and less efficient, by the amount of fuel needed, but it was certainly safer.

“Alright, let’s speed run the rest of the critical sites tonight, and then you can show us the joys of Gormana’s cuisine. We will do the rest tomorrow.” Wolfe suggested.

The Demons cheered, and Galrog checked the messages on his phone. “Now we’re talking. The next on the list is this, and then we will make the loop, so the whole country has a plant in their grid zone at full capacity before it gets dark. It’s still autumn, but it gets cool at night, and if we can stop the blackouts tonight, the citizens will be in a much better mood tomorrow when the news goes out.

I’ve got a message here from the Prime Minister, and they’ve nearly finished working out a pricing plan for power, which will be announced tomorrow in a press conference. It’s about five percent of what it has been, and half of what it was before the last round of plant closures.

That should make it affordable for everyone to heat and cook with electricity instead of wood, which will help clear the air pollution. That will likely take a bit to change, as people stocked up on wood for the winter, but even if they cut back on the usage, and spread the wood usage out over the next year instead of half a year, it will help.

Who knows, they might even take a holiday tomorrow to celebrate while we bring the rest of the power plants online.”

One of the Demons in the back cheered. “BOOZE CRUISE!”

Wolfe laughed. That sounded like exactly the day they were in for tomorrow. Stopping to party at every stop along the way as the lights of Gormana began to light up the night for the first time in years.
