Chapter 1012: 1012 And Done

The remainder of the plants didn’t take them long, and Wolfe barely stopped to talk so that he could keep the process to under an hour a plant and get the work done in time for dinner.

Their estimation of how long it would take for the parties to start had been grossly pessimistic, it seemed, when they arrived in a small coastal city, in a barbecue restaurant near the wharf.

All of the lights were on, and the people were partying in the streets already.

“What’s the big news? We just got in.” Wolfe asked one of the locals.

“They announced a power bill amnesty for the night. The government announced that there would be no power billing tonight as they stress test the grid. Apparently, some Saint from Forest Grove fixed like seven of the power plants in a single day, and now they say that there are no more blackouts.

They’re even going to make an announcement tomorrow about what deal they cut, and the rumour is that the power price will be cheap, like leave the heat on when you’re not home kind of cheap.” The drunk woman explained.

She then staggered away, while two of her friends pulled Cassie and Ella into a happy dance.

The music was blaring through the streets as the band played on a stage outside the restaurant, but the Demons led them to a back courtyard, which was moderately less loud, but still pretty crowded, and waved down a man in a “Kiss My Cod” apron.

“Boss, do you have a big table for us? We just finished with the first round of power plants, and we’re mighty hungry.” The massive Wrathbringer asked the cook.

“Yeah, take the upstairs. It’s closed right now, but I’ll send a server up for you. I take it that one of these three is the Power Plant Saint everyone’s talking about? The busiest night I’ve had in years. Good thing, I was planning to have a live band anyhow.”

Galrog laughed. “Good thing we finished early, or you’d be out of food before we got here.”

The cook laughed. “Well, I will warn you that I’ve only got a few briskets left, and they take all day to cook. But I can do ribs in five hours, so I fired up the backup smoker, and I will have another batch ready for the late night crowd once the first bunch runs out.”

And going by the crowd, he was going to run out of nearly everything. The place was packed, and the entire street out front was filled with the overflowing party crowd.

There didn’t seem to be any other bars in the area, but the other restaurants along the street were beginning to turn their lights on for the evening while Wolfe and the others drank and waited for their food.

A crowd that spilled into the street was a prime opportunity for the seafood places along the street to make some money, and they were reopening for the night once they got some staff members in and the kitchen prepped.

With the power shortages, most places had been closing not long after dark, but now there were neon lights all along the oceanfront, and the citizens were going wild.

“If I had known that they were going to be this much fun, I would have fixed their power plants earlier.” Wolfe laughed.

Cassie rolled her eyes at him. “As if they would have agreed before they were used to the Guardians. You’re too quick to forget that before they showed up, you were best known for wiping out entire army units at a time.

That’s not the sort of reputation that they would have come to for their power grid. The assistance to their outposts in Morgana Coven was the first signs they had that you didn’t hold a grudge about them coming into the Frozen Wastes with the Grand Dutchies last winter.”

“Minor details. Look how happy they are now, it shouldn’t have taken that much to get them on board.” Wolfe replied with a shrug.

“When he puts it that way, it still sounds like he wouldn’t mind just killing them until he finds someone in charge who agrees with him, doesn’t it?” The Incubus Guardian laughed.

Galrog nodded happily. “I can see why the Queen likes him so much. For a Magi, he just gets us.”

The Incubus laughed. “The great Wrathbringer motto. Violence is never the answer. Violence is the question, and the answer is yes.”

The server bringing in an entire cart full of food for them laughed. “That sounds like him. I remember the first day that he was here, he challenged a drunk to a slap fight to stop the man from bragging about how tough he was.

I apologize for the lack of meats, Galrog here can clean us out on his own, but we brought up a full sample of the menu for the night, along with plenty of the trimmings. We’ve even got ten of the seafood pot pies that the big guy likes so much.”

She said lack of meats, but there was an entire brisket, plus sausages, chicken wings, smoked chickens, entire pots of barbecue beans, salad, sliced fruits and then a rack full of seafood pies.

Their group wasn’t small, but that still looked like overkill.

Galrog looked a bit embarrassed. “The food is excellent. But we’re only going to be here an hour or two, then we will be headed home for the night. We’re going to do more power plants tomorrow, but that’s not public news yet.”

The server gasped. “So, it’s not just the regional plants? That is huge news.”

“We’re bringing all the power plants that are still in serviceable condition online. They will be able to reopen the factories after tomorrow. That should be part of the press release, along with whatever price they’ve come up with for electricity now.

The whole power grid will be magic powered, and I will be keeping it supplied.” Wolfe explained.

Technically, it would be self-sustaining, but he was going to take credit for that anyhow.
