Chapter 1017: 1017 Good Timing
Wolfe led the group back to the Capital City and directly to the parliament building, where they had arrived through the portal to begin this adventure. There was a meeting scheduled for that evening, and all of the Guardians assumed that they would be needed at some point to give a speech or some sort of assurance to the people that they would protect the new lowered power prices, or to explain the changes from the Garden Charms.
The plants around the nation were already looking much more healthy than they had, and flowers were beginning to bloom, while a rainstorm had begun in one of the most drought stricken areas of the country.
In a world where a Witch’s curse was a very real possibility for what was ailing you, the mundane citizens were naturally very superstitious, and the sudden blooming of flowers, plus the rainfall when they most desperately needed it, were seen as good omens.
The people had seen and felt the changes all day long, and now they held high hopes for the meeting that the Prime Minister had been putting off for the last fifteen minutes, after he had heard that the Guardians were on their way back to the Capital and that all the power plants were back online.
“Now that our Guardians are almost here, I will begin the press conference. As some of you might already know, thanks to the media leaks from yesterday, the nation of Gormana has signed a pair of landmark treaties with Saint Noxus of Forest Grove.
These are not peace treaties, or an expansion of our trade agreements, as some have suggested.
The first is a supply and price protection agreement between ourselves and the Saint, in which he has agreed to bring every suitable power plant in the nation online, and to keep them online, as long as we do the infrastructure maintenance.
Never before have all of those plants been online at the same time, and I can confidently say that we now have the cheapest and most abundant electricity of any human nation on the continent.
The power will now be set at one tenth of a standard unit per kilowatt-hour, billed by the kilowatt-hour through your existing metres, the same as it has always been. That represents a ninety percent reduction in the peak hour pricing, and a sixty percent discount on the previous off-peak price.
In addition, the rolling blackout schedule has been rescinded. There will be no more planned power outages, as they are no longer necessary to maintain grid stability.”
The Prime Minister paused, giving the reporters time to take in the news. The New Standard Units were the Forest Grove magical currency, and while it was widespread for trade, and essentially mandatory now for international trade, they still hadn’t finished converting the entire nation’s monetary supply.
A few of his critics, the isolationists, would surely have harsh words about the price being set in a foreign currency, but the Gormana Dollar was highly volatile these days, and the risk of hyperinflation was growing.
They already had an agreement to use the currency, they just didn’t have enough goods exchanged for it yet, and hadn’t tried to discuss it in parliament. There was enough to do to keep the country running without starting fights between the political powers.
“The second part of the agreement has also been completed, and you can see the effects on the weather station, as well as on the lawn behind me. The Magi Saint, and his Witch Consorts, have cast a Garden Charm at the level of a Rank Two witch over the entire country.
This measure was not taken lightly, and the costs will not be small. However, the spell will double the output of our crops. All our crops, including those of home gardens, for the foreseeable future. In exchange, we will be paying an annual sum to Forest Grove based on the mana needed to keep the spell running.
That sum will be paid by the government, and taken from the taxes of the citizens and businesses.
What this means for everyone, is roughly ten new standard units per household per year in government spending. However, with the doubled output of our fields and gardens, the Finance Minister estimates that each four-person household will save roughly twenty standard units per week on groceries.” He finished.
Wolfe landed the group on the lawn behind him, and the Prime Minister smiled.
“If there are questions, they can be addressed to Saint Noxus directly, as he knows the intimate details of what is necessary for the spells.”
Wolfe used gravity magic to allow a single step to let him float up onto the platform as he changed to the formal Magi Patriarch robes and put on a smile for the cameras.
The reporters stared at him in stunned silence, unable to believe what their eyes were telling them, and not familiar enough with how Wolfe used magic to know that this was just normal for him, and that he didn’t walk anywhere when flying would do.
Cassie and Ella shook their heads in dismay as Wolfe moved the platform with them and the guardians to the back of the stage, so they could walk off and join the discussion when they pleased, but Wolfe was already addressing the people.
“Good evening everyone. It’s great to be here in Gormana, home to what might be the greatest barbecue restaurant I have ever eaten at.”
It might also be the only one he had ever eaten at, as they weren’t really a thing in Morgana Fortress or Forest Grove. Barbecue street meat stalls were a thing in Forest Grove, but not barbecue restaurants.
“The first thing I would like to say, is an assurance to the people who are worried about pricing. The new standard currency is set by the mana content, and as such does not vary in value for most goods, except in times of scarcity.
With the upgraded power plants and the garden charm, the shortages of power and food will rapidly disappear, and we have asked a number of the Fae guardians from the Covens to open portals directly to processing plants here, so their crops won’t suffer as much from the distance, and the interim needs of the nation can be filled before the first crop is out of the fields here.” He announced.
Galrog gave Wolfe a look that said, “When was that decided?” But the answer was about ten seconds ago when he thought about it. But a brief mental message to Priya would let her pass on the message for him, as she was in Sylvan City and could just call them on the phone.
