Chapter 1018: 1018 Make It Rain
[You want me to ask them to do what?] Priya asked in response to Wolfe’s request.
[Just tell them that they can get one over on the Demons, as the Gormana Guardians only asked for assistance now, and the Guardians of the Sylvan and Morgana territories did it at the start of summer. They’ll jump at the chance, and it will be cheaper to pay to have a portal opened than to ship that much food halfway across a continent.
There will be people coming to discuss new bulk freighter ships at the port as well, because the Fae who can open portals won’t do it forever. Gormana only needs a month or two, as they have year round growing conditions. So, this one round of transfers is enough for them to score points.] Wolfe explained.
[Alright, but I’m telling them that it’s you asking, so if they think you owe them a favour, it’s up to you to sort it out.]
Wolfe turned his attention back to the reporters, who were eagerly chatting with their camera people about what they had just heard. It was an odd thing that Gormana did, where they actually paused in the middle of press conferences to let the reporters give live commentary, instead of holding a question and answer at the end and then having the commentary during the replay.
“Next up, I will discuss the changed weather. I am certain that many of you have noticed that the flowers are blooming, the grass looks greener, and that there are rains in the most drought stricken areas of the nation. That is an intended effect of the spell. There will be fewer severe weather effects while the Garden Charm is active, and the amount of rain will normalize.
That doesn’t mean that nothing needs to change, though. Crop Rotation will be essential to maximizing your outputs, as the spell is limited in its effects, and the better you take care of the soil, the better the outcomes will be.” Wolfe informed them.
One of the reporters interrupted to shout up at him.
“Is it not possible to make crops grow now? I heard that Forest Grove has garden charms so powerful that they can grow fresh produce on demand for meals.” She insisted.
That was true, and they had done it in public a number of times, including the Fallen Empire.
“Of course we can. However, on a nationwide scale, the cost in mana usage would be astronomical, and it would disrupt the mana flow of the entire area, which is known to give nonmagical humans intense headaches as their body struggles to adapt to the power.
It is my theory that all humans could at one point in history wield magic. But now that the vast majority can’t, they are sensitive to powerful spells, which trigger their body to react to the mana density.”
The woman was undeterred.
“How much more would it cost to do that on a national scale? To give us the power to grow a crop in a single day?” She insisted.
Wolfe turned to Cassie, who did the mental math.
She stepped up to one of the side microphones. “For a nation as large and arid as Gormana, about a hundred billion units of mana.”
There was a clatter as many of the reporters dropped their microphones and pens. That cost was outrageous. But for a year’s crops in a single day… it was still tempting as a way to end their crisis.
“Is that even possible?” Galrog asked.
Cassie shrugged. “Sure, if we get Saint Noxus and the Continental Representatives to work with the Pentacles and the willing people of Forest Grove for the day, it wouldn’t be an issue. We would have the mana flow to complete the spell.”
What she was saying was that it would only take about a group of the world’s most powerful people working together to cast the charm. That fact wasn’t lost on the Prime Minister or the reporters. It wasn’t that it wasn’t possible, it was that they would owe a debt too large to repay, and those who would be able to do it wouldn’t ask for money, as they didn’t need it.
A snarky voice shouted up from the crowd. “Would you really demand payment when people are suffering? Do you have no sense of civic virtue?”
Wolfe looked down at the woman with the pixie cut combed to flip over her right eye.
“First, I would like to clarify that while I sympathize with the people of Gormana, and I have taken steps to alleviate your suffering, I am not from Gormana.
In fact, it has only been a few months since your armies were rolling across my territory without so much as a ’by your leave.’ So, yes, I will ask that the services provided are paid.
However, I am not demanding immediate payment, but annual post payment for services rendered, much more generous than even the standard net 30 days billing that most businesses request.
Times are changing, and it is my sincere hope that soon the people of the continent will be able to work in unity, but making demands of others will not get you there.
Finally, Gormana’s crisis is one of production, and not finance. The amount that you each save from these changes will offset the cost many times over, don’t get greedy.”
“Or what?” The woman shot back.
“Or I will remind the world why they call me the Snow Demon.”
The reporters fell silent. This press conference had taken a hard turn from the party mood and good news at the start, and the look that the woman’s coworkers were giving her said she would be lucky to have a job tomorrow.
But behind Wolfe, the mood was lighter. They knew he didn’t really mean to do it, and the Lust Demons were making quiet jokes about how funny it was that he was called the Snow Demon, but it wasn’t a drug use reference.
Wolfe continued. “But there are many good people here in Gormana City, and that would be a shame. Now, back on topic, the crops will yield double what you are used to, and the growing season will be shortened by the spell, so it won’t be long before local production takes up where imports are currently assisting.
As we flew, I noticed that there is a distinct lack of variety, as every farmer works hard to provide the essentials for the people, but as of the next planting, that will no longer be necessary.
I do hope that you will heed the advice to begin the crop rotation plans that we have provided to the Agriculture minister’s regional Guardian, and wish the farmers of Gormana many years of good fortune.”
As he finished his speech, the skies suddenly turned dark, and a gentle rain began to fall on the city, which hadn’t seen rain in nearly two months.
