Chapter 1023: 1023 The City Sells Itself
“Why don’t we show you to the guest suites, and then you can wander the city for a while? It’s still early here if you want to see more of Forest Grove, but on the other hand, if you wake up early, the sun coming over the trees and the smell of fresh morning air in the Fae Forest is an experience that you don’t want to miss.
Then tomorrow, we can introduce you to the teachers at the tower, where most of the classes take place. They’re going to be busy as they have new students coming, but they can make a few minutes for us, or we can ambush some of the ongoing students, who have the day off to help the freshmen settle in.” Wolfe suggested to the groups of representatives.
“That is a wonderful idea, but perhaps a few more of these lovely hotdogs before we go. We will have time to try more of the street foods tomorrow, correct?” The Kanheim representative asked.
“Of course. They’re an essential part of the experience.
But before I forget, here are some visitor cards. There are two primary types of currency here, loose coins with set denominations, and the cards, which are loaded with aura marked mana. They are the same as coins, but easier to carry, and these are loaded with five hundred units each. Not a huge amount, but enough to do some shopping.
For example, the food was about sixty units for everyone.” Wolfe replied.
Between them, they could buy quite a bit, but the real trick was getting the card into their hands. Once they realized how convenient it was, they would go home raving to their leaders about it, and it would help the currency spread through the continent.
There was no need to change most of the nations’ own currency. They would embrace the Forest Grove unit once they started trading here. Especially once they realized that the mages could use the stored mana for spells and not just for money.
For the industrialized human nations, it was practically a cheat code. They had all the technology that the Fallen Empire and others wanted, and none of the magic. So, if they got just enough magic to convert the necessary parts for export, they would get huge amounts of cash, which their wealthy industrialists could burn through like firewood to power more magical transformations.
For Wolfe, it was easy money. He had the contacts and the deals in place to do business with them, all he had to do was set up Forest Grove as the middleman and get a nice cut off the top. But more important than the money was the influence that it gave him. The continent had been a mess for long enough, and he was almost ready to start getting them all past their archaic hangups and ready to move in a more productive direction.
If he did it right, they wouldn’t even realize that they were being guided until the very end.
Wolfe led them the long way to the visitors residences, the local hotel run by the Witches of the Pentacles, who were the ones actually running Forest Grove, while Wolfe gave vague directions.
Very vague directions, to be honest, and mostly they just informed him about things after the fact and then blamed him if it didn’t work out.
“Oh, there is a show starting on the stage, did you want to stop for a moment?” Wolfe asked when he saw the lights come on.
“Is that a festival thing?” The representative from Rencland asked.
“Yes and no. They’re constant during the festival, but the houses are soundproof. The rest of the time they’re more sporadic. This one looks like it’s a band, but sometimes it’s acrobats, talent shows, or comedy gigs.”
Then the singer took the stage, and Wolfe saw that it was a Siren, a type of water Fae whose voice was known to enchant sailors. Letting the humans hang out in front of the stage without warning them was a bad idea, so Wolfe caught their attention before the show started.
“I should warn you, she’s a Siren. Her natural singing voice has a level of magic to it that enchants humans. If you feel yourself drifting off, just sing to yourself or focus on something else. The effect isn’t as strong from a distance, if you want to watch from the back of the group.” He suggested.
“That sounds dangerous.” The representative noted.
“They’re not going to eat people here, and you won’t drown in a crowd on land. So, it’s pretty safe, but you might lose an hour or so during the show.” Wolfe explained.
“How do you deal with it?”
Wolfe shrugged. “It doesn’t bother powerful magic users as much. Her voice is incredible, but I won’t fall into a trance.”
The Kanheim Representative chuckled and looked at one of his assistants. “Well, I’ve got Nathan here to rescue me. The man is completely tone-deaf, with no sense of rhythm at all. We had to excuse him from the formal event because he’s such a bad dancer.”
Cassie laughed and shook her head. “That only makes it worse. The less you are exposed to lyrical perfection, the more vulnerable you are to the magic. Don’t worry, we will put a clear mind charm on you, so you don’t fall under the effects.”
The singer began her first song, accompanied by two guitarists and a saxophone player. It was a gentle crooning blues song, and the entire crowd turned to listen, enthralled by her voice.
Within seconds, Cassie sighed as she increased the power of the clear mind charm. Some of the younger men were still falling under her spell, even with the Rank One spell on them.
“We’re going to have to start handing these out as well. You can just remind people to take them off when they’re drinking, so they don’t lose out on the fun part, but they are entirely too susceptible to the effects of Fae magic.” She whispered to Wolfe.
“And jiggling breasts. In fact, I think half of the reason those two are so bad off is that they’re staring so hard they’re not even blinking.” Wolfe replied.
