Chapter 1027: 1027 Promising

The students ran over to surround Wolfe like he was the ice cream truck personified, laughing and hugging him as Wolfe waved at the exasperated Dorm Mothers, who had been in the middle of explaining how the day was supposed to go.

“It’s good to see you all, we just wanted to do a quick check to make certain everyone was blending in and getting along. I know it has been quite the adjustment for some of you, so if you have suggestions, now is the time to make them.” Wolfe announced.

He didn’t introduce King Petros, as most of the students hadn’t recognized him on sight, and telling them would just make them more nervous.

“Dorm mother won’t let us bring snacks back to the room.” One of the boys complained.

“Are there snacks available if you’re hungry?” Wolfe asked, already knowing the answer.

“Well, yeah, but they’re not allowed in the library or the dorm rooms.” The boy replied.

“And do you know why they’re not allowed in the dorm rooms?” Wolfe asked, and the boy shook his head.

“Nix, can you come over here and explain why there is no food allowed in the dorm rooms?” Wolfe called to one of the cleaning staff, who was on her way to work.

The woman looked shocked that Wolfe knew her name, but she was wearing a name tag, and he had read it as she passed by.

She stopped at the edge of the group and gave a polite bow.

“The second week the dorms were open, we removed eighteen pounds of mouldy cake, stale cookies and spoiled fruit from the dorms during our cleaning rotation, and the third week, we had to do an intensive clean in eighteen units to find hidden food that had spoiled, so we could cleanse the smell from the dorm buildings.” She replied.

A few of the students looked panicked, and a squirrel – eared girl raised both her hands. “They’re not going to steal my nuts, are they? I need them. I can’t sleep if I don’t have them safe nearby.”

Nix shook her head and smiled. “We don’t remove shelf stable goods during the cleaning, only items that are inedible. However, if we do find excessive amounts of food debris on your floor or in your bed, we will be making a note in our reports to the Dorm Mother.”

That comment made the beastkin girl look a little terrified. The Dorm Mothers were far from the most powerful people in town, but they had an aura of authority to them that kept all the students in line without so much as having to raise their voices.

That was a Witch Charm, Wolfe knew. But it was very effective on unruly students, especially the younger ones, who actually needed parental supervision.

“So, if we only bring things that won’t spoil, and don’t make a mess, then we can have snacks in the dorm room?” The boy asked hopefully.

“If you aren’t bringing things that spoil and aren’t making a mess, we will never know that you had snacks in the dorm room. We don’t go through your personal belongings when we clean. Or better, you could get the professors to teach you the cleaning array once you are powerful enough, and then you could tidy your own rooms before the Dorm Mothers can catch you.” Nix suggested.

That was the ultimate goal, for them to be able to use essential household spells, as many of these students would be working as high-ranking servants in the future. But that level of complex air magic would require them to be at least Rank Two, or to operate the spell manually.

While they talked, Wolfe looked around the group with Detect Hidden, searching for hidden bruises, signs of abuse or even long healed scars that would suggest that some of them did not actually want to return home.

If he found any, he would either address them personally, if they were new, or have the Dorm Mothers talk to them, if the wounds were from before they had arrived in Forest Grove. Their deal with the Fallen Empire deliberately left it open for them to remain here, so Wolfe hoped that he wouldn’t find anything too bad.

There were many old scars, as children in a world without healing magic would get, and a few of the students had been flogged in the past, with whip scars on their backs, but Wolfe didn’t see any signs of long term physical abuse, and only two with recent bruising.

One was a larger boy, some form of Minotaur type Oxen or Bull beastkin. There was bruising on his face and ribs, but he didn’t look like the type to be bullied, so it might be from a fight.

The other was a small Mouse type beastkin, and the bruising was mostly on her upper arms and throat. That wasn’t good.

Wolfe cleared his throat to get the attention of the group. “I would like to speak with a number of you about ideas for the Academy. I will choose at random today, and the Dorm Mothers will have a suggestion box to hand to me at the end of the week, after your new roommates are settled in. You can make them anonymous, or put your name on if you are hoping to tell me more about your ideas, and both will be taken just as seriously.

Now, I think we will take you two, petting each other’s tails. The gentleman in the glasses at the back, the Minotaur with the golden nose ring, and the mouse with the turtleneck sweater.”

The young couple who had been caught flirting both blushed while their classmates giggled, and the lone human Wolfe had called on looked startled.

He hadn’t been paying attention, as he was engrossed in his spellbook until he heard his description and everyone turned to look at him.

“Dorm Mother, do we have a suitable space here, or should I take them to an empty classroom?” Wolfe asked.

“There is a meeting room on the main floor for visitors, so we don’t have to let them up into the dorms.” She replied with a gentle smile.

“Wonderful. Good luck everyone. Please make your new classmates feel welcome here in Forest Grove, and show them just how exciting their time here in the Academy could be.”
