Chapter 1069: 1069 Black Depths
The Fae seemed shocked that Wolfe could communicate with them underwater, or perhaps they were shocked that he was speaking human using sonar, but they recovered quickly and pointed deep out into the ocean.
[It’s not far to the start of the corruption. The two continents were only a hundred kilometres apart at this point, so we will reach it in a few minutes at this rate.
I must say, for a land liver, you are surprisingly adept at using fins.] The Selkie responded in his mind.
Wolfe nodded. [It’s surprising to me as well, but I’m still able to use more magic to move faster if I’m holding up our travel.]
The seal form of the Selkie gave him a puppy-like grin and gestured to the two mermen with a flipper.
[That’s what I brought them for. If you were too slow, they would just pull you along with us. But we will be there in only a few hours at this rate, and that is more than fast enough. If we were moving any faster, I might not be able to keep up.]
Wolfe realized that while the aquatic body of a Selkie was incredibly agile, they were not really built for a straight line drag race.
When the ocean got intensely dark as the depth and pressure increased, the Mermen cast a spell on Wolfe that let his eyes see a grey scale version of the world around him. He had been using [Detect Hidden] already, and that was working well, but this was much more clear, though there wasn’t much to see as they followed the barren sand of the sea bed.
Then, tendrils of dark curse energy could be seen floating in the water, and the trio of Fae hesitated, steeling their resolve.
[Normally, this is as far as we go. But we promised the Queen that we would escort you to the closest intact barrier.] The Selkie explained.
Wolfe nodded and cast armour spells on them all, which should keep out the unholy energy and the Witch Curses that were floating around the area.
Then he activated [Mana Purification] in as large of an area as he could. That should deal with the miasma in the immediate area, but he would have to come up with some other solution for the Undead, if he wasn’t going to just use [Necrosis] to release them to the Underworld.
He couldn’t bring them back to life, even though they were his ancestors. Or at the very least, some of them were his ancestors. That was Witch Magic, and he hadn’t thought to bring one with him.
Though, the Fae could heal and cleanse as well, so it was possible that one of the three with him might be able to bring a few of them back to life again, to provide a living history of the war up to the point of their death.
That would be a wonderful thing for the modern world. There was a chance that they might not be happy to be reunited with the world of the living, but Wolfe suspected that he would be able to find at least a few of the Undead who had retained some rank and intelligence which would allow them to communicate even without being revived.
They seemed to instinctively recognize him as a Magi. The ones in the Frozen Wastes all had if they had any intelligence left, so the same should be true here.
The blackness began to recede as the spells took effect, then the Selkie led them forward slowly, not wanting to get ahead of the cleansing effect.
[This part won’t be as fast, but I think that we can make it to the city unscathed.] She informed them.
[How far is it to the city?] Wolfe asked.
[Not far. I agreed to take you to the first intact barrier, and that is over the Noxus Family beach house near the coastal city.
The Fae have tried to explore it before, but we think it was empty during the war and the spells only activated to protect the property when the water rushed in.]
Then it would have stayed active because the crushing depths of the ocean would have destroyed everything if it didn’t.
They arrived there nearly three hours after they had entered the miasma, and the strange sight completely baffled Wolfe.
[I thought that you said it was abandoned? There are clearly active spells there.] Wolfe informed his escorts.
[I don’t think that those are spells.] The Selkie’s terrified voice mumbled in his mind as a female figure in the distance waved happily at Wolfe.
The figure stopped just before touching the barrier, but Wolfe didn’t see any harmful elements in the spell, which was engraved on a stone circle in the front yard.
So, he simply swam inside and then twisted his body to land on his feet, while his escorts waited in the depths.
Wolfe nodded to the woman in front of him and took a deep breath of the oppressively dense air. It almost felt like he was breathing liquid at this pressure, but the armour spell negated the effect enough that it wasn’t harmful.
“Good afternoon. I am Wolfe Noxus, new Patriarch of the Noxus Family.” He greeted the unknown figure.
The woman bowed silently, and moved her mouth as if she had forgotten how to speak.
Then she took a breath and tried again.
“I am Jolene, caretaker of this beach house, and seemingly eternal servant of the Noxus Family, Patriarch.” She replied.
Her eyes flashed deep red as her gaze turned to Wolfe’s neck, but then she seemed to snap out of it and her expression returned to politely neutral.
“I have come to cleanse the corruption from the area, and to check on the protective spells that survived the end of the war. The previous Patriarch has returned to the afterlife, but he had designated the sunken continent as a memorial to the innocents killed before the sinking.” Wolfe explained.
