Chapter 1077: 1077 Welcome Home
Once they were through the front door, Wolfe followed the old Vampire to a sitting room that was decorated as if it was outside, themed as a garden, with wicker furniture that was enhanced with the same magic cushions that Wolfe was used to.
The Selkie was much more concerned about sitting on two hundred year old wicker furniture, but once the others had been seated without issue, she settled in, and then gasped at the comfort.
The vampire smiled as he saw her reaction, then began to speak.
“Well, where should we start? I suppose introductions are in order. I am Vladimir Noxus, Grandfather of the Immortal Saint, and Castellan of the Noxus Family home. I am currently nine hundred years into the traditional thousand-year tenure for undead advisors, though it has been some time since I had anyone to advise, so I might choose to extend that time, if there will be more frequent guests.
The house was left mostly intact, as there were copies of all of our stored knowledge sent to the colonies before the worlds were shielded, so feel free to ask for any knowledge that you might seek, Patriarch.
Might I ask, is this your consort? Or an escort sent by the Queen of the Sea?”
Wolfe chuckled. “She is an escort sent by the Queen to ensure that I made it here safely, and to report back on what we found. I dealt with the issues outside the barrier, I do hope that wasn’t too presumptuous.”
Vladimir waved his hand dismissively. “If I had known that you could just bury it without magic and burn it, I would have done it myself. It appears that the humans haven’t stopped using the cursed stuff, if new methods of dealing with it have been developed since the war.”
Wolfe nodded. “It was used again for the first time last year, and I found the solution entirely accidentally. Lighting it does require some precautions, as it creates a vortex that will pull unsecured objects and people into the flames, but otherwise it’s not a major issue.
The reason that I came here is twofold. First, to see if anything was intact, and to help cleanse the miasma that has overtaken the continent. But second, and more personally importantly, I was looking for any records that the Noxus Family might have left behind on the methods for advancing to the King Rank.”
Vladimir smiled. “Now, that is something that I do have a lot of documentation on. I did it for my son, who did not succeed, and even more for my Grandson who did, in the end. I even produced a summary volume so that you can more easily find the documents you might be looking for.”
That sounded like much more than Wolfe had expected. “Just how many volumes of assistance did you produce?”
The ancient Vampire shrugged. “Give or take about seventy thousand. But we can eliminate the ones that didn’t work, and the ones that aren’t appropriate to your specialty. You will need one affinity to push beyond Expert in order to make the transition, or some sort of other adaptation, so the methods are somewhat individual, but they still hold some similarities across all Kings and Queens, even those of the Demon Realms.”
Wolfe smiled. “I have met quite a few of those. My father is somewhat renowned for his research there.”
Vladimir looked shocked. “I didn’t think he would say anything about that to you. It wasn’t common knowledge among the other Magi.”
“He didn’t. Queen Elizabeth of Gomor told me about his visit, and I spent some time in the towers of the Magic King, researching in his Library. The Undying Saint left many interesting books there.”
The vampire laughed, and genuine interest flashed in his eyes. “You know, given his proclivities, I had half expected you to have either feathers or a tail.”
Wolfe shook his head. “I was born in the Morgana Coven’s capital after he resurrected himself. There were a few hundred years between myself and his time in the Demon Realms.”
The Selkie was looking at them both in shock. How could they talk so casually about somewhere as dangerous as the Demon Realms? Not only that, but to discuss copulating with species that weren’t even Lust Demons to trick them into it? The Magi really were crazy.
But sometimes that level of crazy was a good thing. Who would have thought about using magical fire of extreme intensity to set an Antimagic weapon on fire? The logic behind that tactic was either brilliant or so idiotic that nobody had ever thought of doing it before.
Certainly nobody in the ocean, but then fire magic was an extremely rare skill down here.
She smiled at Wolfe. “I can see now why you said that it would take more than a day. With seventy thousand volumes of reference material, even the summary is going to take some time to get through.”
Vladimir shook his head and began to cast spells as he stared at Wolfe. “I think we can skip most of it. There is something odd about his progression already. I don’t know what level Saint Noxus’ Unholy Magic mastery is at, but it has already transformed his Mana Cores, and that is beyond what is needed for the process.”
Wolfe frowned. “That’s not a result of my talents. I had a minor altercation in the Lowest Planes, and the energy from that place flooded my body and altered my mana cores. It’s not exactly a negative, as my mana density is already twenty times what it was, and it is still increasing. However, it might create an issue with my advancement to the King Rank.”
Vladimir cast more spells as he examined Wolfe. He was practically vibrating with excitement to see something new after all this time trapped at the bottom of the ocean, and he had never expected the first person to come see him would be a direct descendant of his own line.
