Chapter 1106: 1106 Call It A Night
It was getting dark before the team had decided on the underground portions of the castle, but the other side of the valley was already completed, and they had even gone so far as to have Khalifa help them get Elven Grapes growing on the slopes in preparation for making proper Elven Wine.
This world didn’t have any Elven Winemakers yet, but they intended to import one so that they would have their own supply. They had Dwarves, plenty of dwarves for making Ale and Whisky and working the forges, but Elves rarely travelled from their homes.
The rest of the staff for the castle would be easy to get. The word had spread as soon as people heard why they were leaving town in a large group, and the Pentacle members had been getting constant messages from their friends who had been in contact with “Someone looking for work who was perfect for the position”. Even the human members had gotten contacted by their families, who were happy to send someone over, mostly minor side family members who weren’t likely to make it past Rank One, to work as servants in the Palace.
“You know, not even floodwaters spread faster than rumours.” Cassie sighed as she saw many of the others holding communication tokens and talking quietly.
“At least we don’t need to do a recruiting drive. But we might have to vet all these applicants, or at least have some sort of audition so that we’re not saddled with every spy and troublemaker that the Nobles of other nations can send to us.” Wolfe agreed.
The Wrath Demons smiled at each other.
“We’re excellent at that, can we do it? We’ve also got a short list of recommendations for the Palace Guard to maintain security and guide visitors.” Risa suggested.
Wolfe laughed. “A new list, or one that your Queen has been trying to get hired for a few weeks now?”
Risa laughed, throwing her head back and spreading her wings in a thumping motion that reminded Wolfe of hands hitting a table.
“The same ones that she’s been pushing since you reached Rank Eight. She hasn’t had time to update the list yet, but she was sure you would need personal security eventually.
Now, we’ve got a castle, with very well appointed barracks, so we might as well bring them over and make sure they’re all up to date on the niceties of dealing with visitors.”
A few of the others looked intrigued by the idea, especially the human Pentacle.
“Will they all be Wrath Demons, then?” Nola asked.
Risa shook her head. “Only about two thirds of them will be. The backbone of a guard group is normally always Wrath Demons, but for administrative purposes, public relations and such, it’s better to hire either the Ancient Clans or the Lust Demons.
In this case, the unit Commander is a Magic Demon, the feathered sort with a bird head, while the three admin officers are all Incubi. The rest are Wrath Demons, and mostly male, but with a few female guards in the mix.
The Queen doesn’t worry much about sensibilities, everyone on the team earned their spot in open competition.”
Drazzit laughed. “I had half expected her to send all female guards. Everyone else sends the Patriarch only women, and his first three bodyguards are all female as well.”
Nola smirked. “The guards at the gate of the garden of Eden. Along the walls and guarding the doors are strapping male guards, but once you get inside it’s just beautiful women as far as the eye can see.
If the ladies don’t work to bring in some men on the serving staff, there won’t be any at all.”
Serra, a blonde human mage, laughed at the thought. “There were never men on the indoor staff at my father’s manors.
They worked the stables, maintained the grounds, and did the repairs, but they were never stationed inside the building except for the personal assistants to him and my brothers.
The boys were never allowed to have a female personal assistant.”
A number of the others nodded in agreement, and both Elves shrugged.
“That’s how it was for us as well. Leaving men with the serving girls was a danger to their virtue.” Khalifa asked.
Drazzit nodded. “Yes, if you left an unranked man unattended in the Underdark, you never knew when he would be killed for an indiscretion or sacrificed to the Goddess.”
Monika just chuckled. “Dwarves don’t care. The women are just as rough as the men, and love to compete, so most things are integrated.”
Wolfe turned to the Demons for their opinions.
“Well, we’ve got so many types of Demons, that it’s more about species than gender. I mean, you can’t really leave a succubus unattended around male guests if you’re expecting to get any work done. That’s a business advantage in its own way, but not all of them are as studious as Rail and Dana.
You also can’t have too many wrath demons on the cleaning staff because they tend to have little berserk moments, and that’s not safe around glassware.” Risa added.
Wolfe could see it. Many things would be smashed if he made the wrath demons try to get out stubborn stains in the laundry. It was practically a torture method to them.
He cleared his throat to get their attention. “Alright. We will split up into groups in the morning, and go through the applications. Everyone who has been offered a worker can put their name forward if they like, and then we will split them into jobs.
Nobody who put a name forward will be able to vote on them. So, my bodyguard team will not get to vote on the acceptance of the guards for the castle, and those of you putting forward specific staff won’t get a say on their hiring.
It’s the best way that I can think of to avoid favouritism, and for the others to point out the most likely bad options. If you just have a generic reference, make sure you get a background on everyone, and we will start in the morning.
I did the interior of the castle for tonight, so we can get some sleep after we finish the messages. There are more than enough rooms, so just pick the ones you want, or we can all go to the visitors’ hall, which has fifty suites on two levels around a central ballroom.
That’s a wonderful design feature, by the way. It lets everyone get to their room easily, and allows for two balconies worth of standing guests to ring the room with a better view than crowded on the floor.”
