Chapter 1113: 1113 Sharra

“Our final test for the head maid position is actually a basic one. We will give each of you a list of staff, with a few details and upcoming events. We wish for you to make a staff rotation, with details on the added tasks that will be needed for the maid staff to prepare.

As head maid, you will be responsible for most of the household servants, and for this scenario, we will assume that the other heads are unavailable, either due to illness or injury.” Wolfe announced.

That was the most extreme case, but every Head Maid prepared for it because there were times that the other heads needed to be out of the manor for days at a time on their own duties, or would be off after childbirth or for illness.

The Pentacle members passed out the notes, which were all identical, and had been prepared during their overnight cram session.

There were four tests within this letter.

One was the actual ability to effectively schedule all departments skilled workers.

The second was a scullery maid who had arrived at work that day with a broken wrist, so she would need modified duties.

The third was a request for compassionate leave on the grounds of losing a cat, with the note that the servant was a Witch. What they wanted to know was if anyone would verify whether the cat was her familiar.

Familiars lived as long as their mistress, but they were not immune to illness or injury. It wasn’t unknown for a rodent Familiar to escape and be eaten, or other animals to get into fights or be killed by wildlife.

In such cases, the Familiar bond would be much slower to recover than in the case of illness, where the Witch could normally summon a new one within the year.

That said, every witch could use healing magic, so it was unheard of for a Familiar to actually die of illness unless it happened overnight and the Familiar had passed before the Witch could get to them, or get someone to attend to them.

The final test was just a simple note among all the experts. A dryad had been assigned to the linen washing portion of the laundry, which was in the underground areas of almost every castle, for over eighty consecutive days.

That wasn’t a big thing, if you were a new junior maid, who worked every day in most nations. But for a Dryad, that was psychological torture, and there was no note about punishment.

The Pentacle members had secretly added a fifth without informing Wolfe, as the matter was a delicate one. There was a maintenance specialist who had been reassigned by the request of the cleaning group’s head to work the stable maintenance.

He was qualified to fill in for the maintenance head who was away, and they wanted to see if anyone would pick him to organize maintenance for the day instead of doing it themselves.

Every castle had a few untrustworthy staff who hadn’t been caught at anything serious enough to fire them yet. But not every Head Maid cared.

Once they had the notes and the list of tasks, everyone was led to the main dining room, which had enough seats for the whole group, and began to make their schedule.

Time was part of the factor, as a Head Maid had many tasks for the day, and you wouldn’t want them spending multiple hours planning a rotation daily. But hasty work could lead to oversights as well, so in a way this was more of an attention to detail test than one of skills.

If they didn’t have the skills to do the job, they wouldn’t have passed the most basic vetting.

Over the course of the next half hour, the candidates worked to finish the duty roster, then double-checked their work before handing it in.

No third checks, they didn’t want to appear indecisive, but they also didn’t want to miss anything, so the test couldn’t rely upon only their first judgment.

The Pentacle members seated across from the candidates collected them and reviewed the notes while adding their own, then passed them all to the head of the table, where Wolfe sat with Cassie and Ella.

There were many impressive efforts, but after going through them together, one in particular stood out.

Six had found a solution for all of the core tests, and only two had moved the sketchy maintenance worker back into the Palace.

A few of the witches had simply put in a note to heal the scullery maid before sending her back to work, which was a reasonable solution for the Witches. A few had noted to have a healing potion put on her tab.

They were actually free to the staff, and available at the nurse’s station, which everyone had properly staffed. But they didn’t know that yet, it wasn’t in the details they were given.

But one, a Witch named Sharra from the Free Covens, had made a note to hold her back to heal her in private and find out how her wrist had been broken.

She had even relieved one of the labourers who had formerly been a guard from his morning duties, in case the problem needed ’solving’.

The maid’s duty rotation had her on the schedule in the kitchen the day before, and she couldn’t have done that with a broken wrist.

She had also given the Dryad from the laundry room the day off. Maids were salaried, it wouldn’t cost her anything, and a day to be outside and do as she pleased would be good for the Fae.

First and foremost, a Head Maid kept the castle running. However, a good one also looked out for her girls. It didn’t matter what the problem was, they would make certain that it was resolved and didn’t fester and grow into a larger issue.

Cassie smiled at the reminder of the Head Maid of the Noxus household in the Morgana Fortress City. She was an ancient old woman, whose daughter and granddaughters were all competing for the job when she finally agreed to retire. But she was like a guard dog with the staff. Nobody messed with her staff.

On one occasion, that had even gone as far as stabbing a member of a rival family who had gotten too handsy with one of her maids on the way to work.

She was a bit crazy, but Cassie thought that was the best way.

[Does everyone agree? There are many qualified candidates, so it’s down to personality.] Wolfe asked through the Pentacle link.
