Chapter 1114: 1114 And Now The Others
The members considered it for a bit. Fierce was a good thing, to an extent. They didn’t want a crazy woman, or one who would terrify the staff, but if she was willing to go all out to make sure nobody was hurting people who couldn’t defend themselves, it was not a bad thing.
Plus, it made Cassie happy and reminded her of home. That was a fairly important consideration as well.
Wolfe rapped his knuckles on the table for attention. “Ladies, after much deliberation, we have found every one of you to be qualified for the job, but there were a few who truly stood out to us, and those names will be passed to the one whose scheduling decisions impressed us the most.
Sharra, will you accept the position of Head Maid?”
“It would be my great honour.” She agreed, with a small tear forming at the corner of her eye that made the other candidates smile despite their disappointment.
She would be a good leader for their teams, and they would have to put in the effort to try to get one of the department head positions, which would be decided later.
“Now, we’ve arranged that just in time because there are nearly a hundred more staff waiting impatiently for you to interview them with us.
Don’t be afraid to cut some if you feel that they do not have the potential, or you see a flaw win their character that might cause problems later.” Wolfe reminded her.
A few of the others looked startled.
“You would really turn down even a simple scullery maid for poor character?” One asked.
In most households, they were only a half step up from slaves. Certainly, a Monarch didn’t give a damn about them as long as they weren’t causing trouble for the Nobles.
“We’re not short on applicants, and a good number of them are likely to be nothing more than spies who are only vaguely competent at their jobs. The more of that sort that we weed out, the less drama and shirking of duties everyone will have to deal with later.
Getting started with new people is hard enough when they’re actually here to do their job. Getting started with a bunch of spies and slackers will just annoy everyone.
I’m sure you’ve all had bad coworkers in the past, and you know what to look for. So, if Head Maid Sharra agrees, you are free to help her with the selection and assignments. I have no other duties for you today, and she will be choosing the department heads.” Wolfe replied.
Wolfe then went to the main courtyard and arranged to open the portals to over a hundred different locations.
Unlike the Head Maid Candidates, who were guaranteed a spot within the castle, some of these might be sent home, and many would be assigned positions within the staff quarters on the other side of the valley, or working the farms and vineyard.
There were also drivers, messengers, errand boys, and even a few pilots who had come to interview, on the off chance that they could get a steady job here.
It was the Noxus Castle, after all. They had magical cars and airplanes, and they were bound to need to communicate with others without using portals eventually. It took quite a bit of magic to open portals, so not everyone could casually use them.
Plus, there was a certain privacy to sending messages directly, as portals had a distinct signature, and anyone with a bit of skill could tell where a recently closed one had been directed.
Having them gather outside was the only way that this could work. There wasn’t any way to keep track of them all if they were wandering around the castle, and they didn’t have enough of the staff set up yet to keep things organized.
Fortunately, Sharra was happy to take charge.
“Those of you here for a cooking position, please step to the side. You will be meeting with Head Chef Andrea.
Those who are here for grounds keeping, errand running, accounting and personal assistant jobs, please step to the side to meet with our Head Butler.”
The man looked at Wolfe, and he realized that he had forgotten one important step. Butlers were customarily given a working name, to keep their duties for their employer official and separated from their personal affairs.
“Head Butler Davis will take care of the applicable household staff applicants at the south end of the courtyard.” Wolfe announced.
Then he gestured to the Priya Family’s candidate. “Butler Raj will handle the farm and labour staff applicants.”
Unlike the older generations, they weren’t completely segregated by gender, as there were some women among the candidates going to see Davis and Raj, but the vast majority of the applicants still kept to the traditions.
Then Sharra started tapping candidates for positions as she read through the applicant notes that Cassie had given her. They were not official heads of their departments, but a probationary period, and filling the job for the day.
It was a form of audition, and if they could nail it, they would certainly get the job, as they were the first choice.
“You really do know how to cause chaos, don’t you.” Priya sighed as she saw the hundreds of applicants flowing into the compound. Once the portals had opened, many more people had decided to try their hand on the job application, and now even this massive courtyard was getting overfilled.
“I suppose that we should give them a hand and get the Pentacles to start sorting people into lines, or sending away those who were rejected.” Wolfe agreed.
Cassie laughed. “Just wing it, what’s the worst that can happen? It’s the Wolfe Noxus way.”
Ella nodded. “It’s been working out for him so far. He managed to talk his way out of a death sentence for being a man using magic, reversed a Familiar bond to claim a pair of wives, and then took a Familiar Cat as his own, even though neither Demons nor Magi use Familiars.”
Wolfe felt Stephanie laughing at that as she rested on the castle wall and watched the chaos.
Cassie looked around. “Speaking of which, where is that lazy cat? I know she’s here somewhere, and it’s time for her to look human again and start helping out instead of laughing at us.”
