Chapter 1159: 1159 Good Times
Wolfe looked up from a report on the newest Academy funding initiative as he heard awkward footsteps coming into his room.
Ivan was holding Drazzit’s hand as the Dark Elf led the young Magi into his office.
“He insisted on walking.” She explained, as the boy beamed in pride at showing off his new skill.
“Hi Papa. Do you have cookies?” Ivan asked in his musical tenor.
Wolfe smiled as he inwardly tried to calculate where the time had gone. He saw the kids every single day, but he swore that just last week they were newborns. Now, Ivan was walking, talking, and soon he would be a going concern for the staff.
His smile had a hint of magic to it that even the Succubi recognized as an unfair advantage.
Wolfe didn’t know which of the parents it had come from, but somewhere in his genome was a passive magical ability that increased his charisma.
The girls weren’t much less abnormal, and they had already begun learning to fly, which was far more stressful for the staff than a charming smile.
Wolfe opened a small portal to the pantry and took out a small plate of cookies and dessert squares.
“You can have one, choose well.” He instructed.
Ivan smiled up at him. “Three, Papa?”
Drider chuckled and shook her head at the exchange. Then Wolfe leaned forward to boop Ivan on the nose with his finger.
“That trick doesn’t work on me, and you shouldn’t use magic on the staff. One cookie before dinner, no more than that.”
Ivan frowned and tried harder to make the spell work, but he only succeeded in giving himself a headache.
“See, that’s what you get. Now, what kind of cookie do you want?”
“Ginger!”
Wolfe handed the boy a gingersnap cookie, and Ivan took a seat on the sofa while Drazzit handed Wolfe a stack of papers.
“I finished the documents with the Underdark representative. Everything is in order. The Dwarves are pleased with the quality of the shipment, and the goods in exchange have arrived.
Everything else has been moving on time. The gemstones for King Petros made it on time, as usual. Their orders have really picked up, so you might want to have a talk with his emissary soon to discuss a treaty on expanded raw materials shipments.
Also, if you can capture your daughters, I’m sure your wife would appreciate it.”
Wolfe extended his senses, and found the girls escaping through the fresh air vent from their room.
So, he opened a portal in front of them, so they would exit into his office and not the kitchen.
First Maria, and then Calypso tumbled out of the vent, spreading their wings to soften their landing before realizing that they were in the wrong room.
“Ladies, come join your brother on the sofa. I have cookies, and then we need to have a little talk about escaping through the vents. You are covered in dust.”
The girls giggled as they ran to sit beside Ivan.
Papa Wolfe was never the mean one, he just made sure they didn’t run away until someone who would actually punish them arrived. But this time, he had cookies.
That was how Ella found them when she came looking for her daughters. They were covered in dust from the vent, cookie crumbs, and sported matching smiles on their faces that said they were in no way apologetic for having found a way to escape from their nap time.
On the other hand, Ivan had come here before his nap, and he was beginning to nod off, which was making the girls tired as well, but they knew that Ella was going to be upset they escaped.
“What do you have to say for yourselves?” Ella demanded as she glared at the girls.
“Papa has cookies, and they’re good. Can we get a blanket? We’re tired now.”
Calypso’s innocent face made Wolfe chuckle, which earned him a glare.
“You, sir, are part of the problem. Can’t you just once encourage them to make good decisions, instead of getting in trouble and then running to their Papa for protection?”
Drazzit chuckled. “When I was little, I always used to hide behind my mother when I was in trouble. I think it’s the nature of children from Royal Families.”
“Not your father?” Ella asked.
“My mother would eat him alive if he dared to defy her.” Drazzit laughed.
“Do Elves taste good?” Maria asked as she struggled to keep her eyes open after skipping her afternoon nap.
“It’s a figure of speech. She wouldn’t actually eat him.”
The girls nodded as if they had received valuable information, then nodded a bit deeper and fell asleep next to their brother.
Ella sighed, and created a blanket to lay over the pile of children on the sofa.
Drazzit patted her on the shoulder. “One day you will look back on these times and smile. The memory of how children were when they were young is very different when they are grown than when you are living it.”
Ella sighed. “Are you sure about that? Because all I see in my future is a pair of flying chaos gremlins that can use magic.”
The Dark Elven Princess chuckled. “Fortunately, they do calm down some before they awaken their magic. I think it might be a blessing of nature, as if they had their magic now, when they were in the Witch equivalent of their terrible teens, they would be uncontrollable.
I think that the one to watch in the future will be Ivan. If he inherited even a fraction of his father’s skill with magic, the pranks will be never ending. He’s already a going concern with the ladies on staff.”
Wolfe chuckled. “Don’t worry, I will teach him the virtues of treating a woman right. I won’t let him turn into a scoundrel.”
Both women laughed at that. “What experience are you going to base that advice on? Just telling him not to do what you do isn’t going to dissuade him. You are the King, after all.”
Wolfe pretended to be offended. “Hey, I treat all the ladies in my life well. I just need to teach him to focus.”
