Chapter 1112: Raijin’s True IdentityPittar! Pattar!
While the Konoha ninjas were busy repairing the Four Purple Flame Formation and levelling the arena, the rain clouds that had been gathering overhead finally released their moisture, pouring down on the colosseum accompanied by flashes of lightning.
However, the rain didn’t slow the Konoha ninjas as they swiftly completed their tasks. With the arena ready for the fight, it was time for the final match of the first round of the third phase of the Joint Chūnin Promotion Exam.
Once again, Itachi appeared in the arena and announced, “Uchiha Kiyomi of Konohagakure and Itsuki of Sunagakure… please step forward.”
Both genin left their respective waiting rooms and entered the arena.
“Are both of you ready?” Itachi asked.
“Yes,” Itsuki replied, eyeing Kiyomi with a vigilant and solemn expression. ‘She won’t awaken the Mangekyō Sharingan too, right?’ he wondered nervously, recalling Sasuke’s unexpected awakening of the Mangekyō Sharingan during his battle with Raijin. The possibility of Kiyomi doing the same unnerved him. ‘I have to end this quickly… I can’t give her the chance to awaken something like that!’ Unlike Raijin, Itsuki wasn’t entirely confident in his ability to defeat someone who might awaken the Mangekyō Sharingan. He understood that his best chance was to finish the match as quickly as possible.
Kiyomi, too, nodded, “…Yes,” though her expression was distracted. ‘I hope Sasuke-nii-san is alright…’ Her concern for Sasuke weighed heavily on her mind. If not for her own match, she would have already rushed to Konoha Hospital to check on him. ‘Itachi-nii-san hasn’t left either…’ she thought, glancing at her brother with a thoughtful expression.
With Itsuki’s vigilant stance and Kiyomi’s distracted thoughts, Itachi signaled the start of the match. “Begin!” he announced and with that, the last match of the first round began.
…Konohagakure Hospital
After conducting a thorough examination of Sasuke’s body, Yui reassured Izumi, Mikoto, Shisui, Jiraiya, and Kakashi, “There’s no need to worry. Sasuke-kun’s condition is stable, and he hasn’t suffered any life-threatening injuries. The wound on his chest may seem severe, but Raijin’s attack didn’t cause any serious damage to his organs. I’ve already mended the wound and provided a blood transfusion to address his blood loss, so everything should be fine. He should regain consciousness within a week at most.”
Mikoto, still gazing worriedly at Sasuke lying unconscious on the hospital bed, asked, “A week? Why that long? Is Sasuke really alright?”
“I assure you, Mikoto-sama, Sasuke-kun is perfectly safe,” Yui replied with a reassuring smile. “There are several reasons why he hasn’t regained consciousness immediately. He lost a significant amount of blood; his body was under extreme exhaustion—likely from constant training—and the strain of awakening the Mangekyō Sharingan. Additionally, his mental state was highly agitated, which likely consumed a lot of mental energy. Right now, both his mind and body are weak, and staying unconscious for a while is actually beneficial for a full recovery.”
“Yui-san… please… please take care of Sasuke-kun,” Izumi said bowing to Yui.
Yui nodded with a light smile, “Don’t worry, Izumi-chan, I’ll make sure that Sasuke-kun regains consciousness as quickly as possible.” After once again reassuring Sasuke’s family, Yui started to prepare a report to properly monitor Sasuke’s condition.
…
While Sasuke’s family was relieved to hear that he would recover, Jiraiya and Kakashi still wore solemn expressions.
Stepping outside the ward, Jiraiya couldn’t help but remark, “Raijin of Amegakure was able to defeat Sasuke, even after he awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan… It’s hard to believe.”
Kakashi shrugged, “Is it really that surprising? Raijin also managed to push Darui of Kumogakure to his limit. Honestly, this outcome isn’t unexpected.” From the start, Kakashi had his doubts about Sasuke’s chances against Raijin. In fact, Sasuke’s defeat had been within his expectations. “But… yes… this was Sasuke with the Mangekyō Sharingan. Although he’s still unfamiliar with its power, it’s surprising how easily he lost. Raijin didn’t even seem to be pushed to his limit.”
“The Lightning Chakra Armor, right?” Jiraiya asked.
“Exactly,” Kakashi nodded. “Raijin appears to have mastered the Lightning Chakra Armor, but he didn’t even feel the need to use it against Sasuke who was using Susano’o and Amaterasu. That’s what concerns me… just how deep is his strength? How much is he holding back?”
“There’s something else bothering me… why did Sasuke lose his composure like that? Throughout the battle, he seemed highly agitated, as if he was taking things too personally. Why do you think that is?” Jiraiya asked, stroking his chin.
Kakashi sighed, explaining Sasuke’s previous two encounters with Raijin. The first was during the opening ceremony when the rules of the Chūnin Promotion Exam were explained, and the second was in the Forest of Death during the second phase of the exam. “Both times, Sasuke suffered defeat… so that might be why.”
“Is that really all?” Jiraiya asked, sensing there might be more.
Kakashi hesitated before continuing, “There are two other things that have been bugging me…”
“What are they?” Jiraiya pressed.
“First,” Kakashi began, “while I was training Sasuke, he asked me what it felt like to use the Sharingan without being a Uchiha. At the time, I didn’t think much of it. I assumed he was just curious, so I answered based on my experience. But during his fight with Raijin, I noticed something unusual. On more than one occasion, Sasuke mentioned ‘revenge’ and ‘Tou-san’s eyes.’”
“Wait, what? ‘Revenge’ and ‘Tou-san’s eyes’?” Jiraiya was taken aback. “Are you sure?”
“I’m certain,” Kakashi nodded. “It was hard to hear what the two were talking about in the middle of their fight because of all the noise from the explosions and the fighting, but when I was in the management area, I read Sasuke’s lips. He definitely mentioned ‘revenge’ and ‘Tou-san’s eyes’ multiple times.”
Jiraiya began analyzing the information Kakashi had shared. “So, Sasuke asked you what it’s like to use the Sharingan without being a Uchiha, and during his fight with Raijin, he repeatedly used words like ‘revenge’ and ‘Tou-san’s eyes.’ Could that really be a coincidence?”
“There’s something else troubling me,” Kakashi added. “Raijin used Chidori against Sasuke. Let’s not focus on how he copied the jutsu, but how did he solve the issue of tunnel vision while moving at high speed? I had to rely on the Sharingan to use Chidori to avoid tunnel vision. Ever since I lost the Sharingan, I haven’t been able to use Chidori effectively. But Raijin seems to have no problem at all.”
Jiraiya nodded, adding to the mystery. “And Raijin seemed far more experienced than his age suggests. The way he handled Amaterasu when his hand caught fire was something I hadn’t even considered possible. Not to mention, despite injuring Sasuke and causing him to lose a lot of blood, Raijin avoided hitting any vital organs. He even reacted calmly when Sasuke started to struggle due to the strain of the Mangekyō Sharingan as if he anticipated it.”
Kakashi agreed. “Yes, that was remarkable. Even I couldn’t come up with such strategies when I fought Uchiha Fugaku,” adding, “It leads to two possibilities: either Raijin has fought someone with the Mangekyō Sharingan and Amaterasu before, or he has an in-depth understanding of how Mangekyō Sharingan and Amaterasu work. That’s the only way he could have responded to Sasuke so precisely.”
“Raijin of Amegakure, huh?” Jiraiya muttered, stroking his chin. “Given all this information, especially the detail you noticed during Sasuke and Raijin’s fight about ‘revenge’ and ‘Tou-san’s eyes’… Kakashi, how many chakra natures do we know Amatsukami members represent so far? And which ones are still unaccounted for?”
Kakashi thought for a moment. “It’s unclear which chakra nature Yama represents, but Suijin appears to represent Water, Homusubi represents Fire, Fujin represents Wind, and Dojin represents Earth. What’s left is Lightning, along with Yin and Yang.”
Jiraiya’s eyes narrowed. “Do you think we should reconsider the possibility we previously discarded?”
“Raijin… named after the Shinto God of Lightning similar to Suijin, Homusubi, Fujin, and Dojin… specializes in Lightning Chakra… wears a mask–although it’s a different type of mask compared to Yama, Suijin, Homusubi, Fujin, and Dojin… and is incredibly strong,” Kakashi murmured, then sighed. “Back then, we considered this possibility, but for some reason, it didn’t seem to fit. We were leaning toward the idea that Raijin might have some connection to the Akatsuki. But now, only this possibility makes sense.”
They had considered this possibility before, but several factors led them to dismiss it. For one, they knew what Raijin looked like from the photograph attached to his Chūnin Exam registration papers, and unlike the members of Amatsukami, Raijin didn’t wear the distinctive gold-threaded cloak they always wore, regardless of their activities. Additionally, Raijin’s background and ties to Amegakure clearly exist, Jiraiya had already verified these ties which is quite unlike the other members of Amatsukami, who had no known history, identity, or traceable origins. Their mysterious nature, combined with their concealed appearances, had made the theory that Raijin was one of them seem improbable at the time and led them to explore other possibilities, including the theory that Raijin might be affiliated with the Akatsuki due to his ties to Amegakure. They even speculated that Raijin could have some connection to Orochimaru, especially given their brief cooperation during the second phase of the Chūnin Promotion Exam.
“Uchiha Fugaku’s eyes were in the custody of Amatsukami…”
“Raijin likely needs the Sharingan to overcome the tunnel vision problem while using Chidori.”
“Sasuke’s questions about the impact of using the Sharingan without Uchiha blood…”
“Sasuke’s emotional instability during the fight with Raijin… his obsession with revenge…”
“Raijin’s mastery over Amaterasu… and his knowledge of Susano’o and Amaterasu…”
“Raijin’s skill, his calculated behavior, and everything he did during the Joint Chūnin Promotion Exam…”
“It’s clear now. Raijin is a member of the Amatsukami Organization.”
