Chapter 1604: Important Role

It’s been five minutes.

“He’s taking longer than I thought.” Princess Davina uttered, eyes darting out of the window.

Dealing with hooligans like those people should be easy, but Rex was taking longer than expected.

But then again, he was new in the area.

And perhaps that’s the reason why he took so long to dispose of those people was because it’s hard for someone new like him. Then, Princess Davina’s eyes darted to a man—who only came a minute ago, sitting alone on the corner.

It was the messenger from Empress Morgana—he had already arrived.

Princess Davina could tell from how polished his face was that he came from the royal bubble.

One of the royal guards, perhaps, sent here to deliver the message.

Sighing inwardly, Princess Davina stood up and headed outside to check on Rex.

She exited from the inn and looked to her right, to an alley that seemed to still be connected to the inn, the owner’s personal space. Keeping her head down to avoid drawing any attention, she headed to that alley and recalled something; “The bartender hadn’t come back either.”

Tracing through the alley, she eventually appeared at a stable and a house.

As expected, this was really the owner’s personal space.

’Did he restrain them here? He could’ve handed them to the patrolling guards.’

Princess Davina frowned.

Now that she thinks about it, there was the bartender with Rex, so he knew where the guards were.

No reason for Rex to take this long disposing of them.

“In the stable?”

Princess Davina turned to the stable and walked over to it with slow and steady steps.

It was eerily silent, but she saw movements in the stable.

For some reason, Rex’s voice rang inside her mind, the words she said to her back in Lorayah Village.

’You don’t want to know the real me.’

A bead of sweat trickled down the side of Princess Davina’s face.

Her heart pounded inside, not knowing what she would see inside made her heart race like this.

As she got closer to the stable, the rustling sound could be heard clearly.

Princess Davina reached for the stable’s entrance, and with a deep inhale, she poked her head inside to see what was happening inside. Her eyes widened as she looked around, but she frowned when she found no sign of Rex.

Only a horse inside its cage, kicking back its hind leg on hay, which was making a rustling sound.

“Huh, I really thought he’d be here.”

“Davina, is that you?”

Hearing her name called, Davina pivoted around quickly in surprise and saw Rex.

He was standing in the alley where she came from, looking at her with a raised brow.

“What are you doing?” He tilted his head curiously.

“I…” Princess Davina pointed at the stable. “I was looking for you.”

“Looking for me? Then why are you looking for me here?” Rex looked around in confusion, looking at the place they were in right now. “I couldn’t find the guards outside, so I asked around and went to the guard station. Fortunately, the bartender was there to handle it, saying that those men were disturbing his business.”

Princess Davina’s tensed shoulders eased a bit.

She didn’t know what she was expecting, but it seemed to be a misunderstanding.

“I see.”

“Let’s go back—the guy is waiting inside. Besides, we shouldn’t be in someone else’s property.”

Rex looked at the house.

Both of them were practically trespassing.

It would be embarrassing for the princess to get into trouble for something like this.

Princess Davina nodded and went back to the alley.

She then noticed that Rex’s chin was dripping with water, which was odd.

“Why are you wet?” She asked, eyes narrowing.

“Oh, this?” Rex wiped his wet chin with his hand. “I interrogated them along the way and managed to get some info. One of them spat—on me in spite, which was why my face was wet. As for the other two, they were sent by Ruby and Crystal. Do you know them?”

“Probably one of the Emperor’s harem,” Princess Davina shrugged. “He likes collecting gems.”

“Oh, that made sense.”

Rex and Princess Davina traced the alley and headed back to the inn.

Along the way, while she was not looking, Rex glanced over his shoulder.

I was about to clean the blood that got into the cage, but she was already there.

He turned back to Princess Davina, eyes flickering.

She could be acting, but I don’t think she saw the blood. I should be fine.

A smile curled on Rex’s lips as he wiped his lips again.

Back in the Inn, Rex finally talked with Empress Morgana’s messenger.

His name is Rick, and he’s one of the few trusted royal guards from the Ashmantle Legion, and also a knight, loyal to the Empress even before she was coronated. And the message he brought was quite simple—and expected, which was a good thing for Rex.

A lot of parties weren’t fond of Empress Morgana’s ascent to the throne.

Based on Rick, it was because she came out of nowhere.

None of the nobles expected her to be chosen by the Emperor, so when she did, it caused chaos.

Strong nobles supported another candidate for the empress title, so when the Emperor chose her as the next empress, there was strong resistance from everyone. Some of the Emperor’s close friends told him that it was a mistake, while others who weren’t showed concern.

Of course, none of them could possibly stop the Emperor from making Morgana his Empress.

Like within the Mortal Realm, the ruler is the strongest.

And thus, the only way to stop the Emperor from doing something was through persuading him.

But even so, the nobles weren’t exactly helpless.

All of those who opposed Empress Morgana isolated her, giving her no help in anything she was attending.

Even when the Emperor insisted, they only gave the bare minimum or even less.

It was a form of defiance from the nobles.

Excuses are their shield, and Empress Morgana was left hopeless.

Empress Morgana was practically dead politically, with the only one on her side being the Emperor.

Rex already somewhat knew about this due to the ceremony—where the nobles basically gave her the cold shoulder, coming only out of respect for Duke Lorcan. Even he, a new knight, got more attention than Empress Morgana.

No wonder she looked a bit surprised when Rex engaged in a talk with her.

And Rex also now understands why, when he did, he felt people were staring at him with displeasure.

“What she needed the most is a coronation achievement,” Rick said whisperingly, sighing deeply at the thought of the empress’ situation. “He needed to show her competence through something substantial. One that could change at least a few nobles to her side. And that’s what I’m here for.”

Rex looked down and saw Rick pushing a scroll towards him.

It has no royal stamp and looks ordinary.

“What’s this?” Rex took the scroll, eyes still locked onto Rick.

“Open it,” Rick urged as he leaned back. “It’s from Her Majesty herself, so I don’t know.”

Nodding his head, Rex opened the scroll and read it.

It was the details of what Empress Morgana needed him for, and also an invitation.

Once he checked the content, Rex closed it again and put it away.

He didn’t need to read it properly right now.

Rick then leaned forward, looking at Rex profoundly with his hands intertwined on the table.

“Tell me something, Sir Rex,” His eyes flickered with intent, and there was an emphasis edge—on his voice when he mentioned Rex’s name. “Can you really be trusted? I try finding out more about you, but I can’t find anything.”

“Her Majesty decided to trust me. Are you, a mere guard, judging her decision?” Rex asked back.

“Well, Her Majesty is cornered and alone,” Rick said, shrugging his shoulders without backing down. “She’s being pressured from all sides—so it’s only natural for a loyal guard to be concerned about all the decisions she made. Even the most level-headed ruler can mistake a criminal for a savior when desperate enough.”

Hearing this, Rex smiled.

Considering Empress Morgana’s situation, Rick’s thought processes made sense.

It wasn’t a surprise that he was cautious for the Empress’ sake.

He wanted to know what I got from this to trust me.

Rex nodded his head as he also leaned forward.

“Of course, I want something in return. This is not a charity,” He met Rick’s gaze head-on, showing the clear indication that he wasn’t lying. “Even now, the Empress can grant what I want, but as a friendly gesture, a courtesy, I’ll help her first before asking.”

“Money? Power?”

“A discussion or perhaps an item. Nothing harmful to her well-being or power.”

“I see.”

As expected, once Rick knew that Rex was motivated by something, he didn’t press further.

It’s hard to trust someone who either wants nothing at all, or something they won’t name.

So, with this brief moment of truth, they made the first step to trust each other.

“So, you’re in?”

“Yes, I’m in. Send her my regards.”

Rick nodded his head and stood up to leave without saying goodbye.

He walked out of the inn and left the premises.

Once he was gone, Rex’s eyes landed on the scroll again.

Now that the meeting was over, he opened the scroll and read its content thoroughly.

“Empress Morgana is the one handling that thing, huh…”

Empress Morgana stated in the scroll with her own, delicate handwriting that the matter of settling the new Voidal Monarch into the territory prepared by the empire was now in her hands. Not too long ago, effectively three days ago, the Emperor gave her the task.

It was now her responsibility to complete this daunting task.

Success or failure would be on her shoulders.

A new Voidal Monarch is a big deal.

Thousands of years have passed since a new Voidal Monarch appeared within the empire.

Naturally, all of the nobles had their eyes on this matter, making it a perfect task for Empress Morgana to complete and make a statement. Other than it being a perfect task—for her, it’s also going to be her very first task as an Empress.

Her entire livelihood depended on this.

If she failed here, her situation would get worse, and it would be harder to make a comeback.

Empress Morgana asked Rex to be her disciplinary knight.

He would be the one who watched over the other knights, making sure that they did as she told, and kept them in line if the need arose. Everything needs to be perfect until the end of the task, or else the Empress would be in trouble.

And with her enemies around her, there will be knights who would deliberately sabotage the task.

Rex was there to make sure that didn’t happen.

Considering the importance of this role, Rex assumed that he wouldn’t be alone.

Others would be a part of this disciplinary knight that she assembled, but he wasn’t quite sure.

Nothing in the scroll mentions that.

“What is it? What does the Empress want from you?”

Princess Davina sat across from him, looking at him expectantly.

She had been listening from start to finish and was now curious as to what was written in the scroll.

“Did that knight really leave?”

“Yes, he waited for a moment outside to see if you could be trusted. Just now, he left.”

“I see.”

“So, what is it?”

“She wanted me to be a disciplinary knight for the settlement of the new Voidal Monarch,” Rex said, his eyes lifted from the scroll to look at Princess Davina. Then, he turned the scroll towards her, “And, she also wanted me to ask for your help.”
