Chapter 1043: 1043 Damage Control
While the ten that Wolfe had added to the last two Pentacles were overjoyed, that left ten others from each group who felt that they hadn’t gotten a fair chance. The process had been cut short before they could be properly considered, just because of the advancement of the first Pentacles.
It made logical sense to pick the last groups in a hurry, but it still rankled that they hadn’t even been given a chance.
Fortunately for Wolfe, he had a new plan.
There were plenty of other Noxus Family members here, and while they might not be Magi with huge potential, there was no reason that those who were suitable couldn’t find highly placed jobs in Forest Grove if they wanted to stay and train here.
It was the best place for them to be, especially now that they had gotten a boost in their power, thanks to the advancement of the new Saints.
The humans, at the very least, would need some training before they could be safely sent anywhere.
They were just awakening their magical abilities, and they didn’t know how to intentionally channel mana, or how to successfully form it into spells, but that just meant that the chances they would do something accidentally were increased.
This advancement event was going to drive everyone in town crazy for the next few months at the very least, and they didn’t have nearly enough staff to properly train all the new advancements.
The only advantage that they had was that the witches could be pressed into service as new teachers, as they knew the Elemental spells that were needed, and they didn’t need the mages from the spire every day after the students understood the basics.
Most of the new advancements wouldn’t be doing a full course load, only learning the basics and then studying part-time to build their skills while they worked their usual jobs, so the number of actual students wouldn’t need to be expanded right away, unless they could find another group of mages to fill one of the two empty towers.
Wolfe steeled his resolve and prepared to answer questions as he saw a few of the other Candidates coming his way, looking at him as if he were a beacon of rationality in this whole situation, and not the primary cause of most of it.
“Saint Noxus, is it true that you promoted the Pentacles based on who was next to you at the time?” The young Dryad asked.
“Unfortunately for those who were in the other groups, yes. That was the case.
The advancement of fifteen Saints at once is not the sort of event that can easily be replicated, and the extra power propelled the Fae Pentacle into the Sixth Rank.
If we had waited any longer, much of that potential would have been lost, and there would have been years of arduous training to get them to that point.
So, they were chosen, and they will be my representatives after they are trained.
However, that doesn’t mean that there is no place for the other Candidates here.
There are others who will need advisors, the positions of Lieutenants under the advisors, and a certain amount of training for the human candidates before we can safely send them anywhere.
It looks like you did fairly well for yourself, as you’ve just reached Rank Four, so I’m certain you understand how big of a shock this must have been to the youngest ones, who were only just awakening their powers and aren’t fully trained.” Wolfe explained.
The dryad gave a sad smile before nodding. “Well, it is a lost opportunity for me, but you are right. Being the Personal Assistant to a Saint is still a pretty good position. Perhaps I should talk to the Witches tomorrow?”
Wolfe winked at her and ruffled the leaves on the branches that grew from her head. “You could talk to them today as well. Help them adjust, deal with the chaos and the well-wishers. The sooner you can get in their good books, the better, and this is a great opportunity to prove that you are worthy of being a personal assistant.
There are fifteen new Saints now, and they are all about to find out that their new Rank comes with all sorts of increased expectations on them and their time.”
The Dryad nodded happily, and the other Fae who had come over with her began to confer as they made a plan to stick together and get positions with members of the Pentacles who would be in regular contact.
That seemed like the best option for them until they could increase their own power to the point where they would qualify as a Guardian and be able to take on their own staff and an advanced role somewhere.
Or better, they might be able to get in on the next Pentacle to form, if there was another with enough potential.
If there was a Saint Wolfe, there was bound to be a budget version of him who would grow more slowly but still make it to the Saint Rank eventually. They were Fae, it didn’t matter if it took a century.
In fact, if they had just a bit of patience, they might be able to get in on the first Pentacles for his children.
It was playing the long game, but Magi lived their early lives on a nearly human timescale. Wolfe was around twenty, so he should be having children soon, and they would form their first Pentacles to help them grow and prepare them as successors to the Noxus Family only fifteen years after that.
Fifteen years as a Personal Assistant to a Saint was just long enough to have the sort of impressive resume that they would need to apply for such an honour.
The humans were much more panicked than the Fae were. They had all just awakened powers, and they had immediately advanced. Some of them had accidentally used magic already, and they didn’t know how to do it again, or in some cases, how to make it stop, until someone came to help them.
That issue would need immediate attention, and not with something as simple as a speech.
